In der südamerikanischen Metropole Caracas finden gegenwaertig staedtische Transformations- und Aneignungsprozesse statt, in denen die Gestaltung urbaner Raeume eng mit der Ausformung gesellschaftlicher Strukturen verknüpft ist. Ihre Akteure sind nicht zuletzt Bewohner von Armenvierteln, Basisorganisationen, Medienkollektive und Stadtteilraete.
Im Rahmen der Exkursion wird die Produktion des urbanen Raumes - in einem Lefebvre schen Sinn - im alltaeglichen staedtischen Handeln auf materieller, sozialer und diskursiver Ebene untersucht. Im Rahmen seiner gegenwaertigen Transformationsprozesse, die durch eine starke Dynamik sowie fundamentale gesellschaftliche und politische Konflikte gepraegt sind, ist Caracas ein praedestinierter Ort, um die Produktion von Raum und ein staedtisches Handeln in diesem Sinne zu untersuchen.

Die Exkursion hat drei, ineinander verschraenkte thematische Schwerpunkte:
- Partizipative Prozesse der Stadtplanung und lokalen Politik
- raeumliche Aneignungsformen am Beispiel grossmassstaeblicher Architekturen und irregulaerer Selbstbauten
- alternative organisierte Medien und urbane Repraesentationspraktiken.

Das Politische der Stadt! - The Right to the City?

Die Krise politischer Repraesentation sowie radikale oekonomische Transformationen befoerdern derzeit vielerorts neue Formen staedtischer Praxis, urbaner Mobilisierung und Organisierung sowie kultureller Widerstaendigkeit. Unter dem Schlagwort >The Right to the City< formieren sich seit einigen Jahren in verschiedenen Laendern soziale Bewegungen, bei denen entweder das Recht auf Wohnraum, der Zugang zu Bildungsinstitutionen und anderen staedtischen Einrichtungen, die Praesenz in der Oeffentlichkeit oder die zunehmende Verdraengung von einkommensschwachen Bewohnergruppen aus den Zentren der Metropolen Gegenstand der Auseinander setzungen sind. Auch bei uns ist die Debatte um das Recht auf Stadt inzwischen mit einiger Verspätung angekommen, und stellt nicht nur die Frage, wie urbane Interventionen und Strategien der Raumaneignung und -produktion, welche sich gegen herrschaftliche Definitionen des Staedtischen richten, heute aussehen [koennten], sondern auch nach dem, was wir selbst als das <Politische<in der Stadt begreifen.

metroZones e.V. * laedt hiermit zu einer Veranstaltung und zu einem Workshop am 28. und 29. Juni in Berlin ein um diese Fragen zu diskutieren. metroZones hat sich als unabhaengiger Verein mit dem Ziel gegruendet, an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Wissenschaft und Politik unterschiedliche Ansaetze von Forschung, Wissensproduktion, kulturellen Praxen und politischen Interventionen/Bewegungen zusammenzubringen und zu thematisieren. Dabei setzen wir auf internationale, interdisziplinaere und institutionelle Kooperationen.

In cooperation with Frank Eckardt Kathrin Wildner/Büro für Raumfragen organized the conference Public Istanbul - Spaces and Spheres of the City at the Bauhaus-University Weimar in January 2007.
Following former research projects about metropolis concerning the production, perception and appropriation of urban space (for example in Mexico City) the intention was to initiate a discussion about interdisciplinary approaches of theory and case studies about one of the largest and most dynamic metropolis on the european continent. Istanbul, with it´s layers of the past, present and future seems an appropiate city to study the contemporary situation, the constitution of public spaces and spheres.

As an basic definition urban space is understood here as ongoing and dynamic processes of social and cultural constructions, which materialize in physical sites and places, social interactions, as well as in imaginaries and discursive representations. The focus of the conference was public space. Public space understood as a contested space in which individuals, collectives and interest groups are negotiating about accessibility and visibility, while through this communicative interaction public space itself is created.

During the conference with the presentations of very heterogeneous and interdisciplinary approaches it became obvious that there are differing definitions of public space. On one hand it seemed difficult to overcome polarizations and dichotomic attributions like the historic and the contemporary city, tradition and modernity, periphery and centre, the local and the global. On the other hand there were quite some propositions to concentrate on the spaces in-between, concerning new concepts of build environments to create physical conditions for a public sphere (city planning projects on the waterfronts of the Golden Horn and Bosporus) as well as indicating qualities for new public spaces where access and representation is discussed by different cultural groups (for example the advisory board for Istanbul European Cultural Capital 2010).

Beside the organization of the conference into four mayor panels (Divided Istanbul - dealing with economic and religious structures fragmenting urban space, Experiencing Istanbul - as an ethnographic and artistic look at everyday practices, Planning Istanbul - concentrating on the typology of public spaces, larger city planning projects and new phenomenon like gated communities and Representing Istanbul - doing investigations about the image of the city and its reflection for example in cinema and art) there were main topics as migration, citizenship and "the other" which crossed nearly every discussion about the meaning and constitution about public spaces in contemporary Istanbul.

In this sense the conference concluded with even more questions, indicating the necessity to work theoretically and methodologically on the plurality and multi-dimensionality of urban public spaces in Istanbul. An international and interdisciplinary discussion about concepts and case studies as proposed by this conference therefore seems to be very productive and necessary. It has to be continued with the engagement shown by all participants of Public Istanbul.
